Week 10 rankings, predictions and chat

That was a terrific week, wasn't it? The writing was excellent, the show rate was strong and the voting was well done and balanced. There only was one blowout, too. I'm proud of this league for Week 9. Let's make Week 10 just as good.

The topics are quotes from Founding Fathers. If you're not American, that shouldn't change much, though. Here are the rankings and matchups, which were affected by numerous Week 9 winners signing out in an unusual move:

Championship
1. El Pancake (5-2)
2. zygote (7-2) | “Facts are stubborn things.” — John Adams

Contender match
3. Just Write (4-2)
4. Zombie (2-0) | “The one thing you can't do when you're highly ranked is relax.” — William Floyd

5. timeless (5-4)
6. Adonis (4-5) | “I never expect to see a perfect work from an imperfect man.” — Alexander Hamilton

7. Vulgar (4-1)
8. Split Eight (1-2) | “The slavery of fear makes men afraid to think.” — Thomas Paine

9. oats (8-1)
10. Perpendicular (0-0) | “Mankind is governed more by feelings than by reason.” — Samuel Adams

11. illergicreaxion (0-0)
12. Frank (6-3) | “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” — James Madison

13. Vividlyvague (5-3)
14. Johnathan Mercy (1-1) | “The only safe road to honor, glory and dignity is justice.” — George Washington

15. Smegma (0-1)
16. Certain (1-2) | “Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.” — Ben Franklin

17. dyedinthewool (1-3)
18. MMLP (0-3) | “We look forward to the time when the power to love will replace the love of power.” — William Ellerly

Certain 04-28-2014 03:54 AM

I totally forgot Vulgar and Split Eight battled recently. That was a great matchup, though, so I have no regrets.

Split 04-28-2014 04:36 AM

Championship
1. El Pancake (5-2)
2. zygote (7-2) | “Facts are stubborn things.” — John Adams

>> interesting. i think the outcome very much depends on a combination of Zygote's angle as well as Pancake's inspiration. Topic says Zy.

Contender match
3. Just Write (4-2)
4. Zombie (2-0) | “The one thing you can't do when you're highly ranked is relax.” — William Floyd

>>Just Write will writer a sniper verse and it will be incredible. idk who will win

5. timeless (5-4)
6. Adonis (4-5) | “I never expect to see a perfect work from an imperfect man.” — Alexander Hamilton

>> Adonis has the poetic touch to realize this visiom.

7. Vulgar (4-1)
8. Split Eight (1-2) | “The slavery of fear makes men afraid to think.” — Thomas Paine

>> @Vulgar Good luck, friend. The reinvention of the wheel.

9. oats (8-1)
10. Perpendicular (0-0) | “Mankind is governed more by feelings than by reason.” — Samuel Adams

>> oats

11. illergicreaxion (0-0)
12. Frank (6-3) | “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” — James Madison

>> illergicreaxion will never sign into this site again in a stunning turn of events. frank will recycle and lose anyways :)

13. Vividlyvague (5-3)
14. Johnathan Mercy (1-1) | “The only safe road to honor, glory and dignity is justice.” — George Washington

>> BOTW

15. Smegma (0-1)
16. Certain (1-2) | “Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.” — Ben Franklin

>>Certain but not by much

17. dyedinthewool (1-3)
18. MMLP (0-3) | “We look forward to the time when the power to love will replace the love of power.” — William Ellerly

DITW but hope @MMLP brings the heat

Split 04-28-2014 04:40 AM

Damn, maybe I've matured as a reader/ voter but this league is way deep with talent right now. Hard to pick winners with any confidence.

Gonna have to start writing for opponents, now.

Haha I've battled Vulgar more than I have anyone else on this site, I believe.

timeless 04-28-2014 08:51 AM

timeless 04-28-2014 08:53 AM

Pancake, jw, adonis, vulgar, oats, frank, vv, smegma, ditw.

PancakeBrah 04-28-2014 09:24 AM

Second week in a row I went to sleep okay with having lost only to wake up with a win
Weird. Props to @oats for the verse he submitted. Probably the highest quality match I've been a part of

d0ubt 04-28-2014 09:29 AM

dyedinthewool 04-28-2014 02:09 PM

This week scaareeeesss me!

Frank 04-28-2014 02:12 PM

Apologize to Oats. I was going to hate vote Pancakebrah but I fell asleep. My bad g.

Frank 04-28-2014 02:22 PM

On a serious note, Zygote probably wrote the verse of his life just now.

Wow. Well done.

e11even 04-28-2014 02:42 PM

Championship
1. El Pancake (5-2)
2. zygote (7-2) | “Facts are stubborn things.” — John Adams

Great matchup of diff styles. A must see.

Contender match
3. Just Write (4-2)
4. Zombie (2-0) | “The one thing you can't do when you're highly ranked is relax.” — William Floyd

This will be epic, but Zombie dope though.

5. timeless (5-4)
6. Adonis (4-5) | “I never expect to see a perfect work from an imperfect man.” — Alexander Hamilton

Adonis all the way, if voters can get over his knack for brevity.

7. Vulgar (4-1)
8. Split Eight (1-2) | “The slavery of fear makes men afraid to think.” — Thomas Paine

I think I see Split doing this better, but both are a powerhouse. BOTW?

9. oats (8-1)
10. Perpendicular (0-0) | “Mankind is governed more by feelings than by reason.” — Samuel Adams

Oats over aliases.

11. illergicreaxion (0-0)
12. Frank (6-3) | “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” — James Madison

Haven't read reaxion so I'll go with the favorite by default.

13. Vividlyvague (5-3)
14. Johnathan Mercy (1-1) | “The only safe road to honor, glory and dignity is justice.” — George Washington

Goodluck, Sir.

15. Smegma (0-1)
16. Certain (1-2) | “Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.” — Ben Franklin

I see Certain smashing this topic. Hopefully he'll dive for all the loose balls. And by balls I mean testicles.

17. dyedinthewool (1-3)
18. MMLP (0-3) | “We look forward to the time when the power to love will replace the love of power.” — William Ellerly

This screams Dyed. I see NeoHippy all over this lol. No offense. Term of endearment.

PancakeBrah 04-28-2014 02:43 PM

Let's chill out there, hoss.

I know you love me and that verse probably made your frail little heart skip a beat but there's no need to talk about other peoples verses in here.

dyedinthewool 04-28-2014 02:57 PM

Yes Frank that is not nice and you should know better!

Witty 04-28-2014 03:01 PM

Frank 04-28-2014 05:42 PM

What is next weeks contender match up looking like?
@Certain

Certain 04-28-2014 05:53 PM

Adonis or timeless will face Split Eight or Vulgar.

MMLP 04-28-2014 06:05 PM

@BaronMynd haha pointless but why not

You blew your chance. The rankings are very formulaic. Next week's four main matches will be:

1-2 winner vs. 3-4 winner
5-6 winner vs. 7-8 winner
9-10 winner vs. 11-12 winner
13-14 winner vs. 15-16 winner

After that (and that doesn't factor in sign-outs), sign-ins and Week 10 losers get factored in.

But if you and oats win, you can get your revenge next week.

Frank 04-28-2014 06:24 PM

I sense a Vulgar - Zygote Championship battle in the near future

Certain 04-28-2014 06:24 PM

If anyone would like to contribute to the magazine, let me know.

@zygote, did you mull the idea I sent you?

Witty 04-28-2014 06:29 PM

hi certain.

Certain 04-28-2014 06:38 PM

For those wondering, this is what the seeding order would look like if the playoffs started this week:

1. El Pancake (5-2)
2. oats (8-1)
3. zygote (7-2)
4. Frank (6-3)
5. Vividlyvague (5-3)
6. timeless (5-4)
7. Vulgar (4-1)
8. Just Write (4-2)
9. King Ra. (4-5)
10. Mike Wrecka (4-5)
11. Adonis (4-5)
12. YDK (3-3)

I haven't decided absolutely yet, but I think we'll be able to do a 16-person playoffs instead of 12 with byes, though. The only ensured auto-bids at the moment belong to El Pancake and oats, though zygote, timeless and Adonis are in line to possibly receive autobids for not missing any votes or taking weeks off.

Nothing specific. A roundtable-type thing would be welcome.

What does the schedule for the rest of the season look like?

You mean, topics-wise?

Frank 04-28-2014 06:55 PM

Topic an schedule-wise

Certain 04-28-2014 06:57 PM

Week 11 is story leads, but for the first time, I'll assign each battle a single story lead. Week 12 is pictures, and I was thinking of using paintings. Week 13 is phrases, Week 14 is quotes, Week 15 is story leads and Week 16 is pictures. For those last four weeks, I may not use set themes but instead focus solely on tailoring the topics to each pair of contestants.

The schedule is what the schedule is, with verses due Fridays and votes Sundays.
