Week 7 chat and predictions
Welcome to Week 7, where we try to unmoor this league from its existential crisis of the moment. My efforts to play nice last week set the schedule askew, but I don't think it should be a big issue. As a result, you will have one less day to write this week. I was a bit generous with those who signed in and didn't vote this week, but voting is required and is the only way to keep a league such as this one afloat. So please do your voting or be punished in the future. Like in Week 3, you will be allowed to choose your own topic this week. The thread is up already. Here are the matchups: Week 7 championship: oats (6-0) vs. timeless (4-2) Week 7 contender match: Frank (5-1) vs. King Ra. (3-3) zygote (4-2) vs. Vividlyvague (4-1) El Pancake (2-2) vs. Split Eight (0-1) Totoro (0-4)* vs. Witty (0-2) dead man (0-1) vs. Bladed Thesis (0-0) Certain (0-0) vs. rhetoric (0-0) fraze (0-0) vs. Fig (0-0) * — Totoro may turn one loss into a win by voting on two extra battles this week. Also, please vote in the poll. |
I'm so happy to be back :)

Week 7 contender match: Frank (5-1) vs. King Ra. (3-3)
Frank has something to prove, but not counting out Ra - he could make this close with a superior concept. zygote (4-2) vs. Vividlyvague (4-1) This will be dope as fuck I think, very contrasting styles. Against most I'd give Vivid the advantage here for being fresher after a week off, but zygote is a machine and is unaffected by daily monotony. El Pancake (2-2) vs. Split Eight (0-1) It's been a while since I read a fresh Split verse, but I feel like Pancake has a similar, but more developed style. I could just be making shit up though Totoro (0-4)* vs. Witty (0-2) I hope this goes down. Witty is inconsistent, but dope. Same could be said for NYC, too. I think NY has that je ne sais quoi, a flare to his writing that gives him an edge. dead man (0-1) vs. Bladed Thesis (0-0) I'm eager to see this, as bladed thesis is only a highly-revered name to me, never seen anything by him aside from the one om he dropped recently, which is hardly an accurate measure of his talent I'd imagine. For familiarity's sake, going with black. Certain (0-0) vs. rhetoric (0-0) this could be fireworks, but I'm not sure if kayge is quite on certain's level yet. fraze (0-0) vs. Fig (0-0) no idea who fraze is, and fig is pretty dope, so going with him. |
I voted for the season to be 12 weeks instead of 16. Reason being is that 16 is indeed very long and by that point the no show rate could increase and/or a lot of people would probably burn out. I've made it my personal mission to participate in every week, something I've never done before, so 12 weeks wouldn't hurt. Even if 16 stays as the plan, at least it'd give later participants a chance to rack up some match ups for a chance at the playoffs. But 12 seems like a good number for a topical league. You can just increase the playoff field to maybe 12-16, idk what your plans for that is @Certain. I have an idea though if you are interested to make the playoffs a bit enticing.

By the way good morning folks. Nice to see a lot of veterans coming in. I remember reading some of Bladed Thesis' work. That match with Black, if it goes down, would be very dope. Gonna drop my predictions in a bit.

Why are we doing pindick topic choosing
|
@Certain , sup with a battle for me
|
|
For the record, I voted 12 weeks out of self interest. A 16 week season would make me Inelligible for playoffs because I'll be gone all of June. Obv not the biggest deal, but if I'm able to compete in the playoffs id like to.

16 weeks is standard gauntlet. Time for a lil spring cleaning. Wheres the Ranks thread? Start with that Paul. Shit is heating up. We weeded out the wack niggas. They'll be back though. And they'll have plenty of time to turn shit around when they do sign back in. |
I haven't voted because I can't decide which is better.
12 weeks will keep ppl from losing interest, but i think you need 16 for the records to truly reflect the akill levels. |
I genuinely feel that I have only one loss so far. the battle I no showed against pinot grig
but such is life in text, as well as in figure skating. its all about the judges opinions |

once you realize that nothing here is objective, your W/L column stops bothering you so much. unless you are, in fact, a bitch. |
12. Going to be a busy summer.
|
The season will be over just in time for the Summer Topical Tournament hosted by El Pancake.
|
Mike look at my record bro. How many times have I literally lost? Exactly
|
I have lost 4 times.
*Looks at record* lul |
I can't complain tho, the other 15 were my own fault.

If I'm still on this site this summer I'm going to have really reevaluate my life |
pancake don't u dare speak like that.
|
ur scaring me :(
|
Lol everyone feels the same way about their losses, pointless conversation. End of the day, if you're happy with the verse you wrote, you've won.
|
Will you host a tournament if I promise to win it?

I'm almost never happy with my verses. I just console myself with, "Well, I did my best with the time and inspiration I allowed myself... meh..." then I continue to live the rest of my life. |
Agreed @Vividlyvague I think there's a degree of that in everything we write, hard to feel fully satisfied with something. What can ya do.
|
I've had gripes about specific votes in a few of my losses. But I'm sure my opponents have felt similarly at times. It happens.
|
i cant imagine ever being completely satisfied with something i have written.
I think i would just quit. |
The similar number of votes on each side (with 16 actually winning) have prioritized keeping the league at 16 weeks because it was originally scheduled to go 16 weeks. I only was willing to change from the plan if a vast majority wanted 12, but the opposite appears true.
Here's a timetable of what that means, based on when verses would be due: Week 7: April 11 Week 8: April 18 Week 9: April 25 Week 10: May 2 Week 11: May 9 Week 12: May 16 Week 13: May 23 Week 14: May 30 Week 15: June 6 Week 16: June 13 The playoffs would then start June 16, and like last season, I'll give a little extra time on verses for the playoffs. That actually could work for you, @oats, if you're willing to get right back on the horse upon returning. You also might be in line for a bye if you keep this rate up. |
wtf how r u so organised.
props tho. |
@Certain id try my best to get it in right when I get back. I could make it work.
|
And for the record, like pretty much everyone here, feel like I've only really been beaten three times, one of which I posted up a joke verse about doin booty because I thought my opponent would no show. But alas, that's not how the cookie crumbled. Clearly, I've defeated people who thought they got robbed so it's all a wash.
|
imagine we worked on our verses for as long as some poets work on their poetry
or authors work on their stories they could take a year or more to work on a short story |
im gonna work on an OM for a year.
