im interested in starting a little home-brew but I'm not sure i have the space. I've heard it takes a good amount of room for equipment if you wanna do it right. true or false?

never done it my self, homies dad a good operation and that guy made some wiiiiicked home brew. drank a lot of it growing up. from what i remember it's not that much space... a couple barrels that sit depending on how much your making... not 100 how he did the bottling carbonation process tho..

it is expensive, time consuming, and labor intensive.

i'd avoid jumping into that money pit unless you are really, really into it.

i am a total beer nerd and ultimately decided against it after numerous false starts.

I'm sitting here drinking this ommegang adoration ale and it's making me want to create something like this so i can drink it all the time.

But ... you can't.

Good things aren't easy to make.

The beer you create inevitably will not be as good as beers made by professionals with more resources and experience. People tend to convince themselves that what they create is better than it actually is, so you may get a short-term or even long-term rush of competence. But it's false.

And you have to drink an entire keg of it instead of moving on to the next beer after a six pack.

Certain seems to be in put down mode today.

no shit my first attempt in my life wouldn't be on the level of ommegang.

but it would be fun to experiment with different spices and flavors and shit to make a nice belgium ale of my own one day.

You wouldn't be able to produce something to specifications in mass quantities as well as someone who does it for a living

But we're talking about actually creating or emulating recipes in small batches of brew

There's no reason why you CAN'T make something good on a personal use level

In fact, anyone who has done any hobby would know that a lot of the time it is garage-sized operations that produce the most desirable equipment

keeping everything sterile in homebrewing is up there with growing mushrooms in vermiculite in difficulty level.

you could make a computer or write at TV show. you could write a TV show in even less time since you already spend a lot of time writing.

More precisely, it requires a lot of time, testing and effort to make something great. Now, if you want to take a well-worn recipe and replicate, sure, you can do that. Perhaps that's what dead man wants. It still isn't easy, but it's much more foolproof.

But going beyond that is difficult. It's not about the size of the operation as much as the investment in time, effort and capital (of various types). Very few people do great things on whims.

It's easy once you get into it, but takes a little bit of work and some how-to reads in order to do it well. Either way it's a cheap way to get a shitbunch of beer and when you nail it you get quite a bit that tastes allright.

We also made about 50 liters of wine for one of our new years eve parties a few years back. Didn't get any complaints and everyone got shitfaced.

I recommend doing it, just don't expect the first batch or two to taste like heaven.

And yeah, I'm feeling surly.

like if ima make a soufflé I'm not gonna buy the EZ bake soufflé powder mix. I'm gonna try to make a unique puffy meat pastry or w/e the fuck a soufflé that has some personality to it

Was pretty simple. My work buddy taught me. And he already had equipment so I dont know about that but the ingredients werent super pricey.

Check it out. Buy one of then 100 stove top kits and see if u like it. If u do u got a lot of the needed materials that u woulda had to buy. Go on PR and search for my post about start up costs. Just search fke my name it should be on the first page of results
