There a world of a difference between reading and listening to an audio book but if people are accessing the written word then I'm happy.

On my phone, but the short of it is that reading demands a lot more out of your brain (this is true even between reading on paper vs. screen). There's more going on neurologically. The act of reading itself, regardless of what you're reading, also fosters mental habits like critical thinking and reflection. Requires active interaction with information as opposed to passive reception of it. But like I said, audio books are much better than nothing at all, and are really convenient for a lot of people. Nothing wrong with them at all.

Nicholas Carr wrote two books (The Shallows and The Glass Cage, I think they're called) which are really thorough looks at the subject. I studied the neurology of reading a lot for grad school tho so you can just skip that and take my word for it.

So what your saying is if I listen AND read along I get twice the brain power?

well yeah, if you listen while you read that is a better way to receive information. even better, if you know sign language, have someone stick their fists in your butthole and sign it to you while you listen and read.

Yes and to me, it's a better method because you are comprehending whats being said as appose to you reading, and your brain deciphering everything you are visually looking at and comprehending it - at least with me it is. It eliminates a few steps in the process. Just plug your head phones and begin - before you know it, it will be over.

Yea, there's a program that will do it, but the translation can be spotty. I read a whole book with a main character named Clan, which I thought was a peculiar name, until near the end of the book it wrote his name as Dan and I was so confused. I finally realized it had been seeing the capital D backwards and Dan was Clan for the whole book. I can't have another Clan.

I can only read epub and overdrive on my ipad, not on my kindle and I hate reading on the ipad. Gonna see if I can get this bad boy at the library.

man, I had a big writing project this month and have been reading research materials for it, so I haven't gotten to it yet. no plans this weekend though so I'm looking to make a last minute run on it.
