THE OFFICIAL NETCEES "HOW IMPORTANT IS GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION IN TEXT?" THREAD

So I read (maybe even voted?) on a @Destroyer battle last week in the LGPA and saw the Norwegian brethren @Objective absolutely tear dudes verse apart in his vote for the poor grammar and/or punctuation used in it. Obj went full on MY NEIGHBOURS A DICK SO I'M TAKING IT OUT ON THE NEAREST NCG TO HIS AGE mode on Des in his breakdown haha!

Text never been that serious to me, I've certainly no problem with others grammar or punctuation, it's just never been that important to me. Infact, in text battles for the NBL or whatever having that lack of grammar or punctuation can actually help you out conceptually and whatever IMO

I've never seen it be too huge a problem in topical battles either in fairness, but apparently in poetry it's srs business? They dedicated a whole feature to it in the LGPA mag but for the life of me I can't see how/when this matters in the slightest.

I'm dead ass serious, voting against someone because they forgot a comma or two seems harsh as fuck to me, and I certainly don't advocate it. It seems some people here disagree though?

What's the deal bruhs?

Split Eight 07-08-2015 04:33 PM

Personally

ifyou put a shitty sentence together and make me read it twice to figure it out, I'm thinking less of your verse as a result

sometimes people are like "damn y'all need to read better my verse was clearly about XXXX YYYY"

then you open their battle again and realize they used about 10 words wrong and generally fucked themselves with their bad writing

If you put a comma in the wrong place idgaf
but sometimes the sentence makes sense in a way you didn't mean so you just shoot yourself in the foot

Razah 07-08-2015 04:37 PM

It only makes a difference to me as far as 'flow'.

Sometimes I'll throw a comma in a random ass place because that's how I would rap it, even though grammatically it doesn't belong there.

Besides that, I could give a shit less. As long as I'm able to actually understand what is being said, then it's all good in my book.

Sn00p 07-08-2015 05:01 PM

Well, it IS something different with poems. Poems are almost by definition really condensed. And that makes everything have greater meaning than it usually does. And this extends to commas. That said, however, punctuation is not always important. So I wouldn't vote against anyone based on their punctuation either. But if you use it masterfully, I might vote FOR you.

Hush 07-08-2015 05:31 PM

Yeah, I'm starting to this his neighbor isn't the asshole.

dead man 07-08-2015 05:35 PM

spelling is important. its text so wtf. spell shit right.

grammar is iffy because you have people in battles who want to type how they speak, or at least how they speak when they're acting like rappers so they have all kinds of goofy slang and shit in their verses. there's a line there but it's a fuzzier one.

Hush 07-08-2015 05:38 PM

LOL at its important spell shit right
aight bet
lets cancel all these leagues and just hold a spelling b k?

or maybe we just do a words with friends tournament instead

dead man 07-08-2015 05:39 PM

also, correct me if i'm wrong, but @Objective is not a native english speaker so his mentality as far as grammar in verses might be skewed from a native who processes the words more naturally.

dead man 07-08-2015 05:43 PM

@Hush

we rarely if ever are voting on the same battles so maybe that comes into play?

if i'm reading an open mic verse and this guy can't spell i am instantly less interested. it's an integrity thing bro. any point you're making is weakened if you can't even use your medium correctly.

I agree about spelling, but punctuation? idgaf.

Hush 07-08-2015 05:45 PM

Yeah
My grammar is really bad and I will be delving into open Mics and poems
I think my ideas are strong enough to stand on there own merit

Look forward to ur critique

on a side note, i just read objective's vote and he didn't really tear destroyer's verse apart at all.. just mentioned he would like to see better punctuation. but gave des props and said his entry was dope. but punctuation didn't appear to be his sole critique or even the reason he voted for inno.

this thread is interesting, don't get me wrong, but its basis is definitely a bit exaggerated.

sral 07-08-2015 05:55 PM

Why the need for the whole magazine article that followed though?

Witty 07-08-2015 05:55 PM

Obviously it's important to have commas for full comprehension of the piece and to keep the flow intact, but other than that I really don't care.

I think it's a recurring theme of the magazine to have an article about elements of writing, and punctuation was already being discussed so it made sense to put it in the mag.

no need

sometimes writers are subtle, if you read academic literary criticism you'd see how

Case in point: http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps...Landles10.html

I think educating people here, maybe 10% of what you throw at them sticks unless they're learning on their own

Imo it makes you a better writer

Split Eight 07-08-2015 10:32 PM

I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I didn't pop a max legal strength Concerta before writing that mag

Dominate 07-08-2015 10:39 PM

If the mistake is clearly intentional or the writer is using slang it doesn't bother me, but if it's clear the mistake has arisen through the writer's lack of knowledge I do tend to look down on it a tad. Commas or lack or them to help the reader catch the flow are OK with me too.

Eg:

"ur verse trash dawg" instead of "your verse is trash, dog" is fine by me, but "you're verse trash dawg" isn't.

would like to add: if you vote like this in the league you will be permabanned

Objective 07-09-2015 06:26 AM

@sraL: My stance on this issue (punctuation and grammar) is found scattered around the LGPA mag and chat:

Also word @Dominate with the ''your'' & ''you're'' shit. Without further adieu I'm ending the post with this:

Take notes my gs

This is the next evolution of text battlers

Tic 07-09-2015 10:50 AM

I think it matters more in topical than text battling. There is a lot of Hip Hop slang, so using that in text is fine. It has to make some sense though.

Destroyer 07-09-2015 12:01 PM

grammar is immensely important
punctuation is worthless

Amen. 07-09-2015 12:41 PM

had no idea lars made this thread

only because

all his threads tend to begin with "LMAO"

this one didn't

Geno 07-09-2015 12:48 PM

Its never been important to me unless the shit was totally butvhered. I believe i misspellings so that the word be pronou ced AS ITS WRITTEN to coincide with syllable matchibg and arrangement. Also to give a more slang feel and hiphop vibe to what im writing. After all. This is hiphop were talking about. Not fucking poetry and haikus and shit. What i write is meant to portray what you would hear in a cypher on a street corner or at a playground or ballcourt with a group of street sense type of hiphop lovers. So in my opinion. Punctuation and grammar are not important and should not be cause to frown upon someones work.... unless its sooo bad with mispellings that whats been written is hard to understand. Then yes. It becomes important.. but ibthink as writers and as people of intelligencewe should all know and understand when and why that line between both exists.

lol no. punctuation can inform grammar. they're unequivocally intertwined.

even in the stricter linguistic sense for grammar, which i don't think you mean, structure is a focal point.

my first post shows how a single comma can change the meaning of an ostensibly identical phrase considerably, albeit with two homonyms, but still. to say one is worthless and the other vital doesn't work when they co-exist. ultimately we all write here, so however much we think our pengame relates to the aural, we're initially reading (not hearing).

punctuation can be used to do some clever shit. punctuation can also be misused to do some clever shit (word to whoever posted e.e. cummings). but here, on this forum, i think punctuation/grammar matter only as much as each individual (writing or critiquing) wants it to: it's their right - fuck prescribing to another's values.

so yea you're dumb. no i haven't read the battle.
