how to pimp a butterfly...

Who feeling it? Other then a couple gems im not feeling it. A lil too eccentric.

PancakeBrah 03-25-2015 04:51 PM

There's a big topic for it either on the first or second page.

Tldr version;

The people who you'd think would like it, do. And vice versa. Big with with white intelligentsia sect.

TYSON 03-25-2015 04:52 PM

O lol my fault I dont look at past threads.

TYSON 03-25-2015 04:54 PM

Compared to good kid its barely mediocre. No jams man.

Geno 03-25-2015 05:00 PM

I wasn5 gonna do this, since im just leRning the art of upping old topics instead of duplicating.. Bu5 since its here and ive recently skimmed the album..

Tbh.. During the skim i found myself not liking it. This album may be an aquired taste. Ill have to throughly listen to really give valid feedback. But as of now from what ive skimmed... Im not in a hurry to listen t
O it. If that helps

Malachi 03-25-2015 05:18 PM

Ghost1 03-25-2015 05:40 PM

Nah this was better

TYSON 03-25-2015 06:22 PM

I know Kendrick is weird but I always found his music still, what's the word, good. This was not my style tho. Actually it was just weird and nothing else. I love myself is probably the best song on the album tbh. When I say jams I dont mean radio jams but at least something I can bob my head to. It felt so offbeat. I dont care what u say if I can't feel the beats and chorus then what u say on your verses gets over powered by pure wackness.

PancakeBrah 03-25-2015 06:33 PM

It's not a "jam" album, though. Kendrick definitely goes for the whole album aesthetic. It's a big departure, sonically, from gkMC but it's dope in a different way. I don't think it's a masterpiece like some people do but it's clearly a very high quality album. Lots of thought put into it.

dead man 03-25-2015 06:40 PM

afrocentrism

Mr. J 03-25-2015 06:53 PM

Still say he tryna be Nas/Andre 3000 and claiming the flow is 'his'
nah bruh..you trying to hard to set the bar high...you can't follow GKMC with this
shoulda made a double disc if he was gonna pull a rabbit out his ass with this one

I can agree alot of thought went into this. Too much. I love Kendrick Lamar music before this album. I'ma listen to it again. Feel like I might have to be on mushrooms or something to like tho.

uh-oh 03-25-2015 07:37 PM

i didnt like this. i dont like kendrick tho so i don't know why i thought i should give it a shot lol

Certain 03-25-2015 08:11 PM

If you're looking for "Backseat Freestyle"-type songs, no, it has none. It doesn't even have anything on the "jam" level of "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" or "Compton" or "Poetic Justice," nothing that you would want to bump in the background necessarily. But I think "Alright," "u" and "i" qualify as radio-friendly, very good songs, more in the vein of "Swimming Pools (Drank)" as far as "jam" status. They make you think but still function as playlist-able tracks.

It's clearly an attempt at a classic album, whether or not you think it succeeds. It reminds me a lot of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The album consumed the songs. But I will take that ambition from time to time as a replacement for the higher-end-production mixtapes that qualify as albums from so many other rappers these days.

I haven't come to a conclusion on it yet, but I get the mixed reaction.

I do disagree with the depiction of its supporters being white. Most of the reviews I've read of it have come from black people. The album is steeped in blackness, in black history, in being black now. It's a very black album, to the point of alienation. White intellectuals might be reluctant to call it on its flaws for that reason, sure, but I definitely have seen and heard plenty of praise from black people (often black intellectuals) for the album.

Truth Iscariot 03-25-2015 08:15 PM

Yes. It's a great album.

I was referring to the reaction on this site, not in the general media.

YOU AIN'T GOTTA LIE TO KICK IT, DANCAKE

glad to hear I'm part of the NC white intelligentsia crowd, though.

nah but it's a classic album tbh. I'm comfortable saying it now. had to build up the courage to call it so quickly, but it is what it is. I feel like people hear For Free and King Kunta and are turned off within the first 3 songs, thus missing Institutionalized, Alright, How Much a Dollar Cost, Complexion, You Ain't Gotta Lie, etc. Not a single subpar track imo, and as an album it flows well.

MBDTF is an apt comparison in ways, just in terms of the grandeur of the album. But I personally thing To Pimp a Butterfly had more vision behind it, more focus, and overall executed pretty flawlessly. At once it sounds old-school and fresh, heavy undertones of jazz, soul, g-funk/funk, etc. It's been on heavy rotation at the oats compound, to say the least.

PancakeBrah 03-25-2015 09:51 PM

It's definitely dope.

I cringed @ the Tupac interview if I'm being honest. I get what he's going for, and he's being earnest, but...idk. I

'u' is probably my favorite song of the year. Not hating it on it. Probably a 9/10 in my mind when it's all said and done. Just dunno about masterpiece.

Mutilate 03-25-2015 10:10 PM

I'm still holding this jar of butterfly's wondering why I'm not making no fuckin money yet

This is ridiculous. Earl Sweatshirt needs to stop with this self-production crap. It's minimalism if it's intentional. It's cheap and stupid if you simply don't know how to make a good beat and won't hire someone to do it for you.

PancakeBrah 03-25-2015 11:26 PM

I likes it.

BARS. SO MUCH BARS. DARK. BEE BOOP. DUUURRRMM. BARS.

Maybe it's the fact I suffered through Mr. Wonderful's so-called rapping then went straight to a prime-Eminem level rapper. It's like, you know, if you live in Siberia then you go to Ohio. But Earl's better than Ohio so that's a bad example. Winter.

I Don't Like Shit is more enjoyable to listen to than TPAB, I think. But TPAB will grow on me and eventually I'll be all like "TPAB is the year's best; the afrocentricality and tonal spread, not to mention the overarching THEMES really puts it in rarefied air." I probably will say stuff like that. But right now, IDLS > TPAB.

Plus you like Doris and that's a horseshit ensemble album. This that straight Earl.

WORD.

Doris had better beats. I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside has better rap. Let's get Earl Sweatshirt some professional producers, possibly even outside the Odd Future clique.

oats 03-26-2015 01:29 AM

I've honestly never listened to Earl Sweatshirt (when my old special ed students were in to it, I took it as a sign that I wouldn't/I'm an elitist asshole). Someone drop some links por favor

dead man 03-26-2015 01:34 AM

lol oats thats wild.

personally i think if you're able to cultivate a special ed fanbase you're doing something right.

if only self-interested intellectual dickbags are tuning into your music what does that say about you?

oats 03-26-2015 01:37 AM

IT MEANS YOU'RE A GENIUS

lol nah that's an exaggerated statement, I took interest in a lot of shit my kids were into, just never expanded it to Earl Sweatshirt for some reason. I got some legit kendama skill though.

boof 03-27-2015 11:29 AM

this album is awesome

be alright, u, hood politics, for free, complexion, i dunno man.

once you take away all the extra intense jazz filler and interludes its really not tough to listen to its just good music

Geno 03-27-2015 11:35 AM

so much going on in here. im gonna have to give this a solid listen after all. probably tonight. dont feel like it now -since it seems you really have to listen to enjoy it. but if dancake says it has bars on bars on bars.. then i have to accept that. i trust his taste in music, as well as some others here.. if nothing else. i have a no from @uh-oh, whos opinion i trust -but knowing he doesnt like m.dot -it could be biased. so a yes from @Dancake will drive me to listen

i will peep
