Sick 04-02-2014 11:37 AM

I'm talking in general

Sharp doing a good job but I gotta remind peeps I need my record updated

Witty 04-02-2014 12:01 PM

It's all about topicals.

Sicc 04-02-2014 12:02 PM

Rest in Pieces.

Witty 04-02-2014 12:03 PM

It's played out, it sucks now...let it die with some dignity.

Indeed but at the same time, so is Storm Shadow.

Batty 04-02-2014 02:20 PM

Netcees Discussion and Netcees Text Battling needs to be separated like them shits is church and state tbh.

If niggas wanna text, there's a section for that. @Witty speaks the truth, if it's gonna die let it die, maybe it'll be like the Phoenix and one day rise from the ashes, hopefully with less corny nameplays and gun references.

I've pretty much done all I want to do in text right now, from topicals to battles to disses to cyphers. Shit, it's not much creativity happening rite nows.

But yo, I know one day I'll get inspired and be back at it, just gotta let that shit happen, can't force it.

anime_boners 04-02-2014 03:14 PM

The problem with text is a next generation never took it over from us relics of the early 2000s

there was the OGs that started in the chat room days
then the early ezboard/other shitty board template cats like Mr. Art / Sha77er / Wally bombmics of the late 90s
then the early 2000s phpbb and vbulletin era cats.. longbar or shortbar or whatever..

New blood basically dried up around 2004. I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find more than 10 text battlers that started after 2006. If you look at this board (and I'd bet probably most others), the population is 90% old heads from the golden ages. The old guard can't carry text forever.

Witty 04-02-2014 03:21 PM

I agree with @Batty and @anime_boners although I had my first text battle in 2012, always just stuck to topicals before that, and I have only had like 10 max and I'm pretty sure I could pose a threat to some top dudes.

Btw whoever made that tag melted my heart a little.

that would be interesting to see how many people started in the last few years

That in bold is truth

All new members are alias of old heads.

I haven't seen an actual noob in years

Nigma 04-02-2014 03:23 PM

Back in the day everyone had their own style for battling. Now all you faggots try and sound the same, then complain that you're bored of it. You did this to yourselves you linear minded unoriginal cowards

We need another 8 mile.

It's funny we used to make fun of the new kids who only started battles after 8 mile.. but it was probably the highest peak of text. Freestyle Friday on 106 n Park was relevant and garnering interest, and 8 Mile really gave the concept of battling mainstream interest..

It was pretty much all down hill after that.

Another 8 Mile wouldn't do it though.. I mean, url and to a lesser extent kotd are sorta pushing battling back toward the mainstream, but, we live in a different age of technology. As teens, we went to the computer to go online. Younger generations now do their internets via mobile.. the concept of typing up text battles just doesn't translate to phone/tablet

I don't think the problem is text rap as much as all message board communities. The message board is a dying concept.

yes, and also no.

the talent pool was waaaaaay bigger back then. in any form of competition, there are always mid-level competitors that imitate the top level competitors.

top guys all had different styles, but there were always mid level clones.. hell even some top level dudes would switch up their styles and copy the guy on the hot streak.

it's just more evident now, when there's a lot less of the mid level talent and even less top level guys.

It depends.. Reddit is essentially a massive message board and has huge traffic.

A handful other boards I post are still bringing in numbers..

On a wednesday afternoon there's 2482 users at the anime board I use.. Most users ever on was 4997 and that was Febuary of this year, so that board is still going strong after 10 years, as are others.

It just requires a draw.. and I don't think hip hop boards have that draw anymore.

Reddit is a completely different format geared toward a mobile audience. Social media must be formatted, and vBulletin and other similar message board formats aren't.

True @reddit

but the anime board, and most gaming boards I've been to are vbulletins.

there;s also tapatalk. even then.. not all those forums even have tapatalk support

Certain 04-02-2014 04:16 PM

I've posted on rap, basketball and journalism message boards for a decade. The activity at all of them has gone down dramatically, regardless of the initial size of the communities.

anime_boners 04-02-2014 04:19 PM

It's the draw, I guess.. online communities all serve a niche. The anime/gaming boards aren't slowing down, obviously, gamers/anime fans/nerds clearly still embrace the concept of forums.

Hush 04-02-2014 04:26 PM

Txt battling alive

Niggas just using diff venues now

anime_boners 04-02-2014 04:37 PM

naw I actually don't post on gaf, surprisingly. some times I check the site

I'm more niche and pretty much only play FGs anymore.. I mostly check Shoryuken / dustloop.

I've seen plenty of newbs - they're usually terrible to start with...like every vet was, then end up getting flamed by board members and never return

oats 04-02-2014 04:54 PM

The forums at sherdog are pretty active, but there's also a hub of news articles to bring people there and keep them talking.

I think our generation viewed the internet as a means to connect with people around the world more than this generation does. They seem to be more interested in nonstop connection with friends. Idk though, probably has more to do with the evolution of the internet more than generational differences; everyone's parents are on fb catching up with old friends and shit.

Diode 04-02-2014 04:56 PM

social media killed forums just like it killed most blog communities

and blogs killed e/n sites before that

and e/n sites killed newsgroups and bbs frontdoor groups

and so on and so forth..

Witty 04-02-2014 05:07 PM

I hate social media :(

Sharp 04-02-2014 08:05 PM

BA's entirely me, sorry. I kind f let it slack cause no one battles and I rarely get to a computer outside of classes. But latelyCertain's been huge about picking up slack, it seems like shits getting updated but i'll try to get on the BA more often
