Thoughts on Aesop Rock

Been playing Impossible Kid, Float and Daylight allot recently.
I like his sound and, since I’m a huge fan of fast rap ( and so dislike almost all rap where people slur allot) I respect how he can say words perfectly, like TechN9ne’d be jealous.
I think he’s too cryptic sometimes, but definitely a lyrical master.

I’d say Lupe and Him are the two best
I can’t give it to either cus Lupe’s more straight forward, so he gets bonus points, but Aesop R has better story telling and is more complex, but sometimes too vague like Coffee or whatever single it was.

dull boy 07-12-2018 02:12 AM

I don’t mind when he’s vague. I haven’t listened to Lupe in a long time.

DMS 07-12-2018 02:22 AM

The only Lupe I’ve seen that’s worth GOAT talk is Mural
The only problem I have with vagueness is easier way to add layers.

Fart 07-12-2018 02:42 AM

Aesop a lyricist? Lol half the shit he says makes zero sense and just sounds good.
Kirby is his best song

Negative, ghost rider. They do make sense and that’s what makes them incredible combined with how they sound.

For Battling 07-12-2018 05:12 AM

I can’t listen to this type of shit lol

Geno 07-12-2018 05:57 AM

Havnt listened to lupe since the cool. He cant be much better than that and he wasnt great then either. Best lyricist? Nah i dont think so

WRATH 07-12-2018 06:20 AM

Couple Playboy mudflaps and hell on his heels
Beautifully echoed in the pace at which he shoveled his meals
Like not a farmer among us had a harvest survive the winter
So dinner split a lima bean and triplets, pick a winner
Took a couple summers pukin' pills behind the dumpster
As the largest pez dispenser on record recouped his numbers
One shoe in the soupy gutter One shoe in the velvet heaven
Where the mermaids Harlem Shake up out a lake of melted weapons

Random imagery, but not all of its nonsense.
@dull boy NSP best album still. Not even top 5 sections on the album

WRATH 07-12-2018 06:26 AM

Most copious, Rain soak the opiates
Notice how the phobias appropriately procreate
Woke up with a ghost farm focused on his groceries
When they aren't telling stories, they are multiplying grossly
on the lawn Let 'em loiter, never let 'em spawn
The apparitions have been drinking this water for too long
So when they gather by the birdbath in the morning he will tell 'em
"I mean no disrespect, but you have all outstayed your welcome."
Interesting, in a sense... Interrupt commiserating phantoms on your picket fence
How quickly they will lift their heads And breathe an ultimatum like, "The dead don't argue."
Said, "You're living by the bayonet, but how alive are you?

That may be so but his music never sounded very good to me

There's a couple here and there but collectively idk

trap 07-12-2018 11:33 AM

i enjoy his introspective shit more than the abstract stuff, but i love it more when he seamlessly blends the two, which very rarely happens.

I can’t much listen to the earlier stuff anymore outside of the nostalgia of it, but his recent work is more approachable. Rappers can be victims of timing and cultural circumstance, sometimes, even if they impose those circumstances on themselves and their style, but

Aes has benefited from mainstream colliding with independent Hip Hop from a personal style perspective, I’d say.

It’s surprising that you, given the way you write, don’t appreciate the same things about him that I do. Not saying YOU HAVE TO I’m just surprised. There’s something so poetic and just beyond the surface with him. It appeals to my elitist lean to listen to a rapper recite verses that have a feel of mystery to them. Not to the point that it’s abstract, but that he describes things in unconventional ways just for the sake of having it sound dope... but still tell a story or thought coherently.

DMS 07-12-2018 12:04 PM

His best song is def DayLight and NightLight combined.

I'm definitely willing to give his catalogue a fair shake. Trust me ive had people telling me he's the one forever. Just never caught on.

I've actually enjoyed reading his verses more than listening to them. For what that's worth.

What's a recent song of his you really enjoy?

BodySnatcher 07-12-2018 12:25 PM

Lucy was 7...

ACTIVATE SELF 07-12-2018 12:26 PM

He was dope, if only for how unique his style was/is. He seemed like a bright star back in the golden age of Underground Hip-Hop (circa the early 2000s). Back then it was all about Def Jux, Canibus, Sage Francis, Immortal Technique, Blackalicious, Dead Prez, Copywrite and other artist of similar pedigree. Fast forward to the present and idk. I never go back and listen to any of his stuff or even check for his most recent projects.

^the song that put me on to his music.

Likewise. And minus the Personal Journals album I feel the same way about Sage Francis.

July 4th, 1981. Candles of a Roman ilk
unloaded from a chevy truck into the home her folks had built.
Patio was charcoals and extended fam in folding chairs,
safely arced around the yard to focus on the smoking flares.
Couple cousins, uncles, aunts. Mostly grown-ups; couple brats.
Baby Ruby's only two. She's too close to the jumping jacks.
Mommy scoops her to the house — buckles up the booster seat.
Rolls her to the storm door. Let her long for all the lunacy.
Telephone distracting Mom — Ruby wriggles out her strap.
Fingers push the plexi-glass; she's off into the sour patch.
Past the pyrotechnics undetected and invisible.
Woke the sleeping beagle, skipping toward the kidney swimming pool.
Off into the yawning blue; the splash would mum the rocket-ships.
Ruby's lungs were filling by the time her kin were cognizant.
Many sprung and sprinted down. All arrive belated, but
the beast she had earlier bestirred had been alert since waking up.
Canine let his gainer fly. Water top commotion grow;
Howling guests assumed the cloven hooves had come to do-si-do.
Frenzied and congested deck part to let the elders see
soggy beagle gently dragging Ruby in his yellow teeth.
Laid the tiny body in the sun before her Father‘s feet.
When she choked the liquid through her bluish lips he dropped his knee.
Healthy air had reconvened. Towel his shaking Ruby off.
EMT confirm the save. Everybody say, "Good dog!"

Most of his stuff is very listenable to me, never got that angle. Unique production and style. Remains my favorite artist since I was 13.

veritas 07-12-2018 02:47 PM

Aesop excels.

Eŋg 07-12-2018 04:50 PM

He's a decent poet, and good rapper. I enjoy his writing and music. It's enjoyable and good. My favorite song by him is 'Daylight' it's quite enjoyable. I've listened to pretty much all his albums. He's a very good artist. I would recommend people to listen to him, for quality entertainment. He's definitely good.

Lol I’d say as a lyricist he’s better

Better storyteller, besides rhymes he has more advanced every technical skill.
He’s not always so clear with his lyrics, but that doesn’t mean they’re meaningless, take away from his flow and clarity, vocab, or his more clear lyrics.

Kill Spree 08-17-2018 12:28 PM

Daylight was cool but he's too obscure for my taste. Even apathy sometimes. And he's a CT rapper and I can probably out write him still
