Objective 03-05-2014 04:54 PM

I can't write even though I want to. Anyone ever experienced writers block due to going through some shit? It's like, I start off well with around 6-10 lines, then everything I thought of (concepts, storyline, creativity etc.) just goes blank and I can't seem to continue on it so I kinda have to start over with something else. This is normally when I write the most and can get a decent written done in 20-30 minutes so it's a new experience to me. If anyone can relate; How did you get through it, or how did you manage to set shit aside so you could write like you normally would etc?

Certain 03-05-2014 04:56 PM

I just try to power through. I end up hating some of those verses, but they make me better in the future.

blast a beat that will inspire you. Eminem Legacy Instrumental has been getting me through Week 1 and 2

Objective 03-05-2014 05:00 PM

Word. Blasting some instrumentals now and going to power through it. Let's see how it goes.

Certain 03-05-2014 05:02 PM

I also try not to be a little bitch.

So, maybe that would work?

I came across this gem. from the site I first started posting on when I was a kid lol

Zen 03-05-2014 05:32 PM

@Just Write that is very true.
@Objective I've been experiencing that for awhile now. I wanna write but no real concepts come to mind so I just write whatever comes to mind. It makes no sense but its fun to read at least. Perfect example of that is in the om right now.

start your writing process with a freewrite exercise. just write anything.
anything that rhymes. short syllable counts, long ones, jumbled all up. just write. let it flow. like two pages full of nonsense. just rhyme your ass off.

after you have gotten your brain in the zone, you can usually tell. once it feels a little easier, focus on concepts. not tying yourself into a strict setting will allow your story to "write itself" to start you off. then build from there. good luck this week bro!

Just Write (1-0) vs. El Pancake (1-0) | "I never said I would stay to the end." — Robert Smith

I'm going with J-Dub here. I think this is a topic he can play with and it seems he's serious at the moment, which to me equals elite talent.

Frank (1-0) vs. Clockwerk (1-0) | "Even in defeat, there's a valuable lesson learned." — Jay Z

Frank - no clue who clockwerk is but Frank is dope, although he dropped sub par last week.

Mike Wrecka (1-0) vs. Vividlyvague (1-0) | "You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past." — Bruce Springsteen

I got ViVi here, dude wrote the fuck out of a verse last week and I don't think he'll stop.

Vulgar (1-0) vs. H4ZE (1-0) | "To live outside the law, you must be honest." — Bob Dylan

Vulgar, rarely will I predict against him.

Cereal_Killa (1-0) vs. patrown(1-0) | "Who needs peace when you can profit from being right?" — Eyedea

C.K. is nice as shit overall, Patrown is liable to beat anyone any week if he's on, but then likely is less then fire. CK in a lopsided win, dude might be the most consistent ever. I got you on the feed soon enough.

ZYG (1-0) vs. oats (1-0) | "Winning isn't everything, and this is not a race." — Aceyalone

Ohhhh shit, I love this bout, could easily be the finals in all honesty. Haven't read Ziggie's verse although I know its out, but Ima take Oats, as he's smart enough and talented enough to expose whats been posted already.

Diode (1-0) vs. Adonis (1-0) | "Though my problems are meaningless, that don't make them go away." — Neil Young

Fuck this poser.

Greed (1-0) vs. Ink (1-0) | "No one knows what it's like to be the bad guy." — Pete Townshend

Ink is burning

timeless (1-0) vs. TYSON (0-1) | "Rain comes out the sky every time somebody dies." — Nas

Timeless??

Pinot Grij (0-0) vs. fresh (0-0) | "All we know is the beginning. Nobody controls the way that it ends." — Royce da 5'9"

Pinot Grij is talented, no clue who Fresh is.

Innovator (0-1) vs. Totoro (0-1) | "He who will die is he who will kill." — Joe Strummer

Double No-show? I got Vator because I know he'll at minimium post something.

Exoduzt (0-1) vs. King Ra. (0-1) | "Walking side by side with death, the devil mocks their every step." — Robert Plant

King Ra writes shit I enjoy consistently.

sacrifice (0-1) vs. Objective (0-1) | "I hope you wake up in time for the revolution." — Common

This is actually a very close battle in terms of preferred style. I will say Fice, but an upset would not surprise.

dull boy (0-1) vs. dyedinthewool (0-1) | "I don't care what you think, unless it is about me." — Kurt Cobain

Dyed in the wool

maths debate (0-1) vs. neutral (0-1) | "Exploitation is the world's oldest occupation." — Ras Kass

No clue who either is still, probably should vote on this.

WZA (0-1) vs. YDK (0-1) | "I'm not half the man I used to be." — Paul McCartney

YDK is nice most of the time. I think I read WZA's verse this week but can't remember if I did, so YDK cuz I know the skill is there.

Adonis 03-05-2014 09:21 PM

@Certain

Can you give Zygote the exact same topic twice this season?

I want to see if the machine has a default

Word. That's how I usually do it, just start to write some nonsense and when an idea kicks in I build on that or whatever. Never really faced this issue before, writers block, yeah, but not this. I get in the zone, then *snap*, back to where I started when I first sat down. I usually don't have a problem with topicals, concepts or storylines tbh. My brain is just crumbled up on nonsense that has nothing to do with writing, I can't get my mind off of shit that bothers me. It's extremely counter-productive and annoying af, specially since it has never interferred with my writing before.

Certain 03-05-2014 10:22 PM

Danny Brown is great once you let him enter your brain.

He might be the best rapper right now.

He's cool, but honestly the shit he raps about is damn near shock value bulshit

half the time he makes me laugh, but I can only listen to him solo because I've tried to bump him with others in the car, I don't know if the understand what he's saying or whether they even listen, but I just feel ashamed

downloading that Aceyalone album now. Got the "classic" moniker from Certain and a rare 5 star rating from AMG so I figure it'll be a good one.

@oats, it's on my top 50 rap albums of all time list.

I found this awesome reggae mix on YouTube that runs for like an hour and I'm in the recovery room dancing on the way to the pixies......This is how I shall get through the night tonight lol.

Whatup

Diode 03-06-2014 01:14 AM

you ever get caught up in your verse unexpectedly when it was just supposed to be a throwaway and now you want to flesh it out more and make a whole thing out of it but the line limit and/or time limit is up so oh well?

that sucks. see, there is a drawback to last minute writing.

who knew?

Certain 03-06-2014 01:15 AM

You're allowed to expand on it for Open Mic.

Well laa dee da, Kids like Diode say such stupid things because they've lived their entire lives with a touchtone telephone. They don't know life without it and what a true revolution this whole thing has been. Our generation watched it all happen from childhood through high school. That's why I hate seeing myself or anyone born in the early 60s get lumped in with "eigtenienials". I grew up with Huns and Japs, newfangled telegraphs, tvs with color-vision and volume knobs, the portable brick, sunday morning moonshine, lumber mills and string machines, BEARS/McEisenhower, staying out until the gas lamp came on, more bricks, and a whole host of other things the " eigtenienials" have no experience with.

@El Pancake is still very upset that his pretentiousness has been marginalized.

Boo hoo.

Blackstar at 88? atrocious. as is Eminem only having one appearance, at 48 no less. and Black album top 10 all time?

I think you got 1 and 2 right though.

Certain 03-06-2014 01:58 AM

The BlackStar album never connected with me as much as others. Talib Kweli was really rough around the edges still.

And I wouldn't put a second Eminem album in my next 50, either. The Marshall Mathers LP really never did it for me. Too much screaming, not enough meaning. I want an entire album of songs like "Rock Bottom." That'd be in the top 10.

As far as The Black Album, it definitely qualifies as the album I overrate because of a personal connection.
