How I always come weak in the leagues when I've reached the playoffs or semi finals every time I've competed in one? That goes for topical leagues 1-2 punch an the story telling tourney lol I do write for myself in most cases but don't compete to lose

This being a text league, as far as I can see, people want two names and a city with some stupid plot twist that m night shyamalamadingdongus could script while on ketamine... You seem, at least write like you do, verses that would still stand in audio. That's always been my problem with text leagues, people bitch about not catching the "flow" because they aren't proficient in it, and then give negative opinions because we aren't allowed to explain/audiate ourselves, yet still get labeled as needing to improve because fuckers are stuck in text format... And we also aren't given a set of symbols to denotedissonant syllables, expressions, run on lines, stops, extra "jazz style timing" ect. .. A pm with Adonis I had for example... I explained exactly why people dont catch his flow, and all he could say is... Well, thats not how I would write it it in real life, but he couldn't provide how it would sound/read in real life because these text heads are stuck on how they already want to interpret things, rather than how the writers want them to be interpreted

A very wide variety of styles and approaches to content have been successful here, @breathless. I don't recall many verses by Season 1 champion dead man, widely regarded as the best writer here, that included names. He often eschews storytelling entirely. And most people are not voting based on flow as much as rhyme scheme because, as you point out, flow can be interpreted in many ways.

I'll leave it up to @Mike Wrecka, but I know we'd all prefer not to disqualify anyone. Please, calm down, though.

@breathless stop comparing text to audio bro, I don't write to make songs out of then therefore they wont always flow like it. I wrote an entire book of poetry an I'd say 98% of it isn't written like I would speak it or "rap" it. This is a competitive writing league on a rap site not a written rap contest ya feel me? There is a difference in everyone's style, the best overall verse usually wins. Story verses aren't need at all but they're more relatable to the readers normally so if a good story is against a good metaphor it just depends on originality and execution not on which a more thoroughly described story with character development imagery or anything else, its just personal preference and honestly metaphorical verses or symbolic verses are generally harder to execute by nature, its just a part of writing bro, but trust me stick with it and you'll grow as a writer

All I'm saying is I write topicals and my shit would still sound good on a beat.

Sure, we are. It's called punctuation.

If you stick with a rhyme pattern, or general cadence, your reader will pick up on the 'flow'.

No matter how slow or fast you read a bar, the vowel sounds, hard and soft consonants, assonance/alliteration/ etc. all fall in the same order relative to one another.


sometimes you'll run into people who don't get your rhyming, and theres nothing you can do. but i will say that between when I started writing and now, ive developed more of a sense for flow...


that being said, bad flow only negatively affects your verse when the opponent does it really well, or you had very simplistic or dropped rhymes.

in any case, patience and an open mind will get you far
