It's probably like this: They sit in a room and brainstorm shit and determine who to give what material and how to make certain jokes better and shit like that. They work on phrasing. They work on sequencing.

These things aren't haphazardly thrown together with everyone getting bombed and staggering up to the stage to ramble and throw out some jokes.

Really, it's how everything should be done. Even at a site like this, take the tag tournament for example. You should be talking over your lines with your partner, working on how to word them most effectively and how to better spin the name plays. This netceeing stuff isn't serious enough to make that worthwhile, but it would be a big advantage to anyone who took that time.

So yes, Jeff Ross writes his own material. But he probably doesn't write all of it, and he definitely goes over it with the other writers beforehand, again, if only to let them know what he's doing. And when you're a professional comedy writer listening to another professional comedy writer read his latest material, of course you're going to say "I didn't like that line," or "You should start with that," or "That's a great idea, but you've got to add something to it."

That's just professionalism.

and lets be honest...the jokes they do are for movies..none of those jokes would hold merit on a comedy stage.

It's not, though, because his standup is his own thing. This is a scripted television show. It's very, very different. The stakes are higher, and there are more people involved.

I've worked on TV specials before, though nothing as big as a Comedy Central roast. Also, in the past, many of them have referenced "I told Comedy Central I wouldn't curse" or, one I saw a couple days ago from Drew Carey at the Hugh Hefner roast, "They told me I couldn't call (Osama bin Laden) a "towelhead," so let's go with "motherfucker."

if they wrote for them mike tysons, steve o's, gary buseys etc would of been much better then they was.

and jeff ross said all the comedians write ther own material and ther is writers there to help the non comedians if they want it he said it on a podcast

sometimes they decide to ignore the writers and bomb (sup situation), but everyone is written for. what you get is a highly edited version of what happened on top of THAT.
