Far as water goes......gotta know your viruses for water and pathogens in your area. Myself personally for field use I've got an epa certified water filter/ purifier that removes viruses but to extend the life of the filter which is I think 264 gallons I prefilfer with a 100% silk clothe for fine sediment...treat with a solution (I only do this with a filter that does not remove viruses). My backup is a bottle of 100% pure crystalized iodine and a three stage straw filter regulated at like a thousand liters.
U can sun bake water for purification and boil as well..lengthy processes but if you have time I'drecommend it to save your equipment for pinches Gravity filters are great if you have the time...no pumping...very simple and no moving parts to break or replace but again if you're on the move it depends. Cross contaminating while filtering is something to be weary of otherwise you've done all that work for nothing If you ddo a bladder or reservoir you can get an inline filter that will filter the water pumped right through your hose to your bladder...the katadyn does this pretty well in conjunction with the filter like a sawyer but these aren't regulated for viruses... Just the other nasty stuff Hope this helps |
Most importantly.,..read what filters are regulated for what. Some only remove cysts and bacteria...not many remove viruses.
Side note..katadyn have the only pills regulated to kill viruses by the epa |
Damn that's a huge help bro I had no idea viruses could be filtered out or that there were do many ways to purify it lol

No problem I'm still Learning...the hard way too lol. Me and a buddy of mine went on eight and a half mile hike to reach this spot to setup camp....being in the Midwest we had checked the forecast a few days out...mid seventies...perfect. Weather switches at the drop of a hat here and little did we know the temps started getting into the upper nineties with the heat index maxing out at just over a hunned. When we exited the truck to embark on the trail my camelback bladder hose got shut in the door..thought I checked it good but it broke and ruptured about three miles in and all of my water gushed out. Me and him shared his 3 liter but there was no water supply remotely close to us. 100 degree weather and close to a hundred pound packs with little water was bad news and we both knew it...sweated out all of the salts and electrolytes but still in taking water without the nutrients is deadly...you can die from the shit and if you correct the balance too quickly you can die from that too. After that I've been learning all that I can about water
