There are limits. If a shortening of a name that's pronounced differently is used as a nickname, as in Bey for Beyond, then it's 100% fine.

If the shortening could conceivably be used as a nickname, as in Am for Amen, it's a reach but passable.

If it couldnt, eg if you're trying to make a np on Ag from Bags, that's wack.
