I figured you to be a big fan of Hieroglyphics, and you said you liked that Blackalicious album. I really like Blackalicious, Tha Jacka, Andre Nikatina, Lyrics Born, The Coup, Del the Funky Homosapien, Souls of Mischief (and a few of its members' solo careers), The Grouch and selected works by Mac Dre and Too Short. But the area definitely isn't my favorite, and the iconic status of E-40 is fucking obnoxious.

oh shit, I didn't even realize Blackalicious/The Coup were from NorCal. I instinctively associate NorCal rap with hyphy shit. so yeah, I take it back. I remember checking out Hieroglyphics briefly when I was younger, but I never really listened to them tbh. Got my Sunday evening plans now. I like E-40, he's good house party music, but not much more than that to me. I much prefer LA rap.

@quaker oats, start with Souls of Mischief's '93 Till Infinity album (or even song). Then you've got Del the Funky Homosapien's first two albums plus the first Deltron 3030 album. Then there's Blackalicious' first two albums, Tha Jacka's career works, Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker's Latyrx ...

@Certain what is your opinion on Tear Gas?

I havent listened to anything else besides this because that was the first time I had heard of him but your recommendation on albums would be greatly appreciated

Tear Gas is his best album of the five or so that I've heard. I definitely did not realize he had so many mixtapes and albums from earlier in his career. I really like What Happened to the World and his collaboration with Freeway, Highway Robbery.
