be athletic not hench, you guys crack me up.. can't even do 30 minutes of cardio. completely vain-pointless muscular tone. girls don't even really like it either, they much prefer an athletic well proportioned complete body tone. not some guy with a huge back and tiny legs. y'all look like faggots when you try play sports too, awkward.. usually you guys were small skinny boys in your teens. no natural physique.

imagine a world, if you will

in which a complete lifter used compound movements in olympic lifts

in which their physique was proportional

and their 1RM tonnage for OHP/dead/bench/squat was about 1500 lb

and they started and ended every session with jump rope and box jumps

and their "off days" consisted of 2 hours of bjj drilling and live rolling with no breaks

imagine there were a lot of people like that in this world

imagine that

So explain to me again how if you are muscular and large, you must be slow, unfit, out of proportion and get no women?

It's okay, i'll wait.

We forgot, masaii is a UFC hw :-/

Btw, Mir is close to retirement/getting cut, Kongo got cut, overeem is washed up with suspicion of roids being his key to success, and cigano is overhauling his training regiment after getting thoroughly thrashed by the smaller, more athletic fighter.

I have to agree with seyance on this one. I do light weights and mostly plyo and calisthenics, and I'm positive I'd outperform most people here athletically. Ie in actual function or competition (obv not a weight lifting comp). I don't knock being a muscular meathead, but I don't get it unless you are trying to be a trainer or bodybuilder of some sort.

Witty 04-14-2014 06:10 PM

Some people like looking like that, some people don't.

Doesn't really matter what anyone looks like really, it is of no consequence.

It doesn't matter bros.

LOLZORD!?

oats 04-14-2014 07:25 PM

Right, because weight lifting on its own is not functional. When in everyday life are you mimicking flies, bench, etc. if anything squats is functional. My point is that I will get dominated lifting things in a weight room, but lifting things in real life that gpa will be significantly smaller.

veritas 04-14-2014 07:26 PM

Agree with oats.

The answer is: constantly if you are an athlete

pulling and pushing.

that is all it is.

Ghost1 04-14-2014 07:40 PM

Maybe vs a bodybuilder

But vs someone who lifts for strength ie Olympic lifts.....squat, deadlifts, bench, ohp etc

U lose....

Those r the epitome of functional movements based on strength

We just did this convo 2 pages ago?

But yea.....I think at the very least we can all agree we don't want to be like or ever look like masaii.....

Church.

oats 04-14-2014 07:42 PM

Honestly though, I've competed athletically at a level higher than most people here, I'd think at least, don't know for sure. And while those things help in active competition, hardly anyone here actively competes (I know you're an exception, diode - do you just train or do you also compete?). If anything, you can certainly attest to the muscle bodies who come in after a big UFC event who get smashed because their muscles aren't functional outside of the weight room.

Big muscles takes a lot of discipline and hard work, which I respect. I just don't get it for casual life. I'd rather be lean and strong than big and bulky.

I have been training BJJ for the last 2 years and played at a state level for rugby union whilst receiving a scholarship to the best private school in the state. My explosive movements and speed are very good. Just because someone is big and others could never get that big they dismiss it as steroids or nonfunctional (although I would agree in some cases, it is not the case for me).

You never could look like me because your discipline and skill is low tier. Whilst you sleep I train, whilst you party I work and whilst you work I train. Face it, you are IRL a pathetic beta male who grew a beard because he wanted to look tough because he is fat and has the haircut of a 16 yr old lesbian. What a joke, dont ever approach my threads and act like youve lifted a day in your miserable life you fraudulent faggot.

Solid retort

PancakeBrah 04-14-2014 08:26 PM

bench/squat/deadlift/press are functional. that's just a fact. they're compound movements that do more than add muscle.

also, idk why people keep calling them olympic lifts. they're powerlifting lifts. olympic lifts are snatches and cleans and shit like that. although squats are an olympic lift. ive never heard of the big four being referred to as olympic lifts. you're freaking me out @Diode @Bags

using the big 4 will give you "functional strength" (that phrase has become a buzzword that i just ignore at this point). will bodyweight exercises give you functional strength? yes. i would argue they're not as effective at building that "functional strength", though. show me someone who can rep out an impressive weight on bench and i bet they can hold their own in dips. pull-ups are included in any serious lifting routine. it's a blend. people who disregard heavy lifting aren't necessarily wrong, but they could be more right. there's literally no downside to powerlifting. all the old wives tales about being too muscle bound/losing flexibility/etc. have been proven false.

do what you want to do. i personally believe that focusing on those aforementioned compound movements with some pull-ups and other accessory work is the best and most efficient means of becoming "FUNCTIONALLY STRONG". if you think that a strong bench doesn't translate to functional strength, you're wrong. point blank. same with the rest of the big four.

powerlifts+accessory work+HIIT+LISS=functional strength.

being huge like masaii isn't for everybody. even as a proponent of weightlifting i don't want to be that big. but to say it's not practical is short sighted.

Yo this German hoe.just hearted my instagram photo from way back

Is this sex?

uh-oh 04-14-2014 08:30 PM

i just do diamond pushups and wrestle deer in the wild

oats 04-14-2014 08:35 PM

I think there's value in power lifting, I may have jumped to too solid a conclusion when in fact there are caveats. The most fit people I know do a hybrid crossfit and power lifting regiment.

My point was more geared towards the roid monkeys in the gym I go to, the stereotypical monster chest/arms/back who can barely run a mile etc. At least being muscular like that is better than being a fatass.

uh-oh 04-14-2014 08:37 PM

you know whats disappointing THO

i got a bowflex and the shit sucks

it was free, but still, i remembered the commercials like im bout to get diesel on these HO'S

but i fucked with it for like three weeks and there was no change except i was better at bending the BARS

meanwhile i could go to my boys and bench 2 45 plates, like 30 times, not all at once lmao, and be dead for days swoll like a G

either way. its all malarkey because i'll just shoot you in the dick

ill nik-A 04-14-2014 08:37 PM

In my prime I curled 2 plates and two quarters, preacher curls yea
Bench 3 plates on each side
8 plates on each side in leg presses

I too am 5'10 but my strength was sick

I'm retired and eating is much funner, still own guns though doubt they ever go away tbh

yes, i compete.

muscle bodies who come in and try to smash with no experience do get wrecked, sure.

but strength is definitely advantage vs not having it.

Bruce Lee who use to only do isometric exercises even advanced onto weights and said there is nothing else like it to build STRENGTH (not size but strength). Pls V, I want you to evolve. Wont you evolve with me V?
