He didn't realise I also work as an immigration officer for the home office, naturalising people etc

I don't tend to get into the whole immigration debate with people as a lot don't/won't see it positively and have a real ignorant viewpoint of what goes on without knowing what's involved tbh

yeh i get you, its a hot potato subject. It can make your opinion of people change pretty quick too.
