Orc 07-06-2015 11:23 AM

thinking about not watching this anymore. terrible writing, corny lines, Colin Farrel is the only decent thing about this right now.

First of all, I think the 3 main characters are very interesting. I mean, they did a pretty decent job of showing that they all have some seriously fucked issues and there's potential for those issues to come into play now that their lives have crossed paths. So far for me, this is what is driving the show because the murder isn't really all that interesting yet (the murder aspect of season 1 was clearly much more compelling on every level).

my two cents:

The bike cop's gf is hot af. She needs many many nude scenes throughout the season, I don't care about the context. Also, Bike Cop got serious issues tbh... he could probably easily get out of the situation at work if he revealed his issues but has to play it straight.

Vince Vaughn was a horrible choice for that character. I really think they should've went with a different actor for that role. I keep waiting for Owen Wilson to walk in. Vaughn is the only actor that sticks out as bad casting though, I actually like the 3 cops (or is it down to 2 now?) Even Rick Springfield killed it in his cameo.

I like that we already know the girl cop is down for some freaky shit but don't want to commit over it, the possibilities there make me happy. I liked the scene where she is peeping porn.

The Velcoro/Eagle Head dude scene left me like what tho. It was a pretty suspenseful scene, I enjoyed it but yo, we will have to wait until next episode to see how it all works out. I hope it wasn't something just for shock value yanno, it's real important how they play it out. It could be cheap or it could be dope.

I'm still on board with this show though, I would imagine it's going to start picking up.

Batty 07-06-2015 11:31 AM

@Orc damn bro, was it on last night? I was thinking it came on tonight. I will have to peep it this evening, I'm guessing it will make sense then, right?

Orc 07-06-2015 11:40 AM

yeah man i'll be back when you've watched

The biggest problem this season has, compared to season 1, is the lack of focus and intrigue. The first season, if I remember correctly, opened with the murdered girl splayed on the tree with antlers. All of the character building and mood setting was done as a backdrop to a legitimate mystery. The murder was graphic and weird, and it all got more eerie the further it went. Rust Cohle's nihilistic monologuing was interesting because the show had a hook and a purpose. This season put to much emphasis on character building, with rather uninteresting characters, prior to really having us give a shit about the murder. Plus, the crime isn't that riveting. It's a dead city official, killed over a land deal. This isn't an exploration of insanity or psychopathic tendency in people, draped in gothic murder. It's just a run of the mill business-related murder in an outskirt of LA no one knows about. I think Farrell and Vaughn (yes, Vaughn) have been great actors in this, but neither character is that interesting. Farrell's entire wife/son storyline is pointless to me, the wife a cardboard cut out of a cliche wet blanket cop wife. We get it, he's self destructive, at the end of the road. I don't need seven scenes of him in a dive bar slamming whiskey set to emo-core Fiona Apple. Woodruw/Kitsch is a closeted vet with repression issues. Noted. McAdams is a hardass with internal struggles due to daddy issues. Ok, let's get to the part where the murder solving is interesting. The whole "who's investigating who!?" angle isn't interesting when the characters aren't working. The bird head seems like a shoehorned call back/hook to the season one, and didn't really work for me. I will say that the end of episode two was dope. The setting, the music, how efficiently and ruthless the take down was. I almost wish the show had the balls to kill Farrell off. He's been a plus, but it would have been interesting and may have given me reason to give a shit about the murder(s).

As it stands, I like watching it but it's not nearly as good as season one. Maybe that's too high of a bar, but I expected more. Still will watch going forward.

And whoever mentioned the pounding drums against city shots is on point. That first episode was like a goddamn Inception trailer every two minutes. Tried WAY too hard to be serious.

PancakeBrah 07-06-2015 08:11 PM

IT COULD BECOME DOPE AS HELL THOUGH.

Allen Knight 07-06-2015 08:18 PM

idk this season so far is cool, ima give it time before i judge tbh...
i thought colin F died mad early wen he got sparyed last epd lolll i was like damn
but w.e i keep gettin more interested so i'll keep watchin.

PancakeBrah 07-06-2015 08:32 PM

The intro music is ass.

Allen Knight 07-06-2015 08:38 PM

yea shit is corny.

Batty 07-07-2015 01:16 AM

Alrite, I'm caught up now. So yeah, this shit is building up really slow. The shit with Velcora getting blasted has gotta be more to it. Yo, either he is really dead or some thing is going to happen later on down the line. If they don't do anything more with that whole thing, it'll be wack.

Fart 07-07-2015 11:55 AM

Show is good on it's own but it wont be comparable to s1 in any way. Kinda underwhelming so far just because Woody and McConaughey were so good

Amen. 07-07-2015 12:58 PM
