Topicals are man poems, yah? I guess I can give this a try. This will no longer be a man's world. Cheers :)

Good question. Most likely they will be given unless enough people would prefer to select there own through a topics list

millz 07-06-2014 07:17 PM

No thanks.

Assigned topics is the worst shit ever. Stupid.

You mean it's more difficult to think of a decent concept from a given topic than being able to pick from a page worth?

Oh, then yes

YDK 07-06-2014 08:13 PM

Lol @ leaving because its hard

millz 07-06-2014 09:38 PM

It's not because it's hard. It's because I write things I enjoy to write and read about.

It has nothin to do with hard and everything to do with my interest in actually showing up.

Not to mention that it doesn't help improve the quality of writing or show who actually is the better writer.

You don't ask Micheal Bay to make a Terrance Malick film or vice versa.

I'm a firm believer in having a topic list and let a writer write whatever he or she wants and choose to use those topics as inspiration or not use them at all. It promotes writing the best piece possible. Then let the voters decide which they like more.

Adonis 07-06-2014 10:35 PM

Actually makes a valid point. Again though, I'm down for either option. So if more participants would rather select there own topics I would have no issue with that

millz 07-06-2014 10:53 PM

Yea I have no issue with either really. I'm only interested in doing it how I mentioned. But I'm only 1 person.

I was curious because it's not fair to y'all for me to commit to something that someone is gonna spend time running only to lose interest and not show up and make things more difficult for the people who are trying to do something good.

Only voicing my opinion. If you don't like it that's not my problem.

Certain 07-06-2014 11:50 PM

@millz, when I assign topics, I try to consider the writers' strengths and weaknesses and come up with a topic that works for both styles. That's obviously only possible when familiar with writers and would be impossible in an alias tournament. But phrase topics generally are vague enough to work across the board.

Oh. It's nothing personal. I understand some people like things that way and that's totally fine. This isn't the only site run that way. So it's not uncommon. I was just asking to gauge my own personal interest.

There was a time where I didn't care about it.

After doing it for the last decade I've found my desire to write to other peoples tune just isn't in my list of things to do anymore.

That's all

millz 07-07-2014 12:04 AM

And to be truthful I really don't even care about votes or the outcome as votes.

I had a period where I would win just about all my matches because I would write to obtain votes. Maybe win 70-75% of the time.

But since then I've begun writing things that I want the way I want to the detriment of my own record.

The funny thing is the quality of writing I push out now is 100x better than anything I ever won with but it isn't in a form to win "votes". As a result I've probably lost my last 10 matchups.
