Doesn't really matter if what he did steered the group or not as much as the psychological impact it had either way on the group and the setting they found themselves in. No matter how you look at it there's some strong data about group psychology in general even though it's a bit radical. You can kind of see the same development in places where groups of people get together and hierarchies form, maybe most prevalent in middle/high-school.

I would STRONGLY advise watching the Stanford Prison Documentary and the Abu Ghraib Prison doc straight after, the Stanford prison experiment have been tied to what happened there a lot and for seriously good reasons as well.

I saw all the comparisons to Abu ghraib but my only gripe w that is that if I'm one of them soldiers I'd be piss in on an torturing them prisoners just cuz they're punjab terrorist fagots

I dug it. Shit sucked Me in. I haven't seen any of the documentaries so I couldn't compare but from what I'm reading the movie isn't really exaggerated from the actual happenings at all.
