sometimes writers are subtle, if you read academic literary criticism you'd see how Case in point: http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps...Landles10.html I think educating people here, maybe 10% of what you throw at them sticks unless they're learning on their own Imo it makes you a better writer |
I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I didn't pop a max legal strength Concerta before writing that mag
|
If the mistake is clearly intentional or the writer is using slang it doesn't bother me, but if it's clear the mistake has arisen through the writer's lack of knowledge I do tend to look down on it a tad. Commas or lack or them to help the reader catch the flow are OK with me too.
Eg: "ur verse trash dawg" instead of "your verse is trash, dog" is fine by me, but "you're verse trash dawg" isn't. |

@sraL: My stance on this issue (punctuation and grammar) is found scattered around the LGPA mag and chat:

Des learning to throw his voice
Textriliquisim Take notes my gs This is the next evolution of text battlers |
I think it matters more in topical than text battling. There is a lot of Hip Hop slang, so using that in text is fine. It has to make some sense though.

grammar is immensely important
punctuation is worthless |
had no idea lars made this thread
only because all his threads tend to begin with "LMAO" this one didn't |
Its never been important to me unless the shit was totally butvhered. I believe i misspellings so that the word be pronou ced AS ITS WRITTEN to coincide with syllable matchibg and arrangement. Also to give a more slang feel and hiphop vibe to what im writing. After all. This is hiphop were talking about. Not fucking poetry and haikus and shit. What i write is meant to portray what you would hear in a cypher on a street corner or at a playground or ballcourt with a group of street sense type of hiphop lovers. So in my opinion. Punctuation and grammar are not important and should not be cause to frown upon someones work.... unless its sooo bad with mispellings that whats been written is hard to understand. Then yes. It becomes important.. but ibthink as writers and as people of intelligencewe should all know and understand when and why that line between both exists.

even in the stricter linguistic sense for grammar, which i don't think you mean, structure is a focal point. my first post shows how a single comma can change the meaning of an ostensibly identical phrase considerably, albeit with two homonyms, but still. to say one is worthless and the other vital doesn't work when they co-exist. ultimately we all write here, so however much we think our pengame relates to the aural, we're initially reading (not hearing). punctuation can be used to do some clever shit. punctuation can also be misused to do some clever shit (word to whoever posted e.e. cummings). but here, on this forum, i think punctuation/grammar matter only as much as each individual (writing or critiquing) wants it to: it's their right - fuck prescribing to another's values. so yea you're dumb. no i haven't read the battle. |
so basically need mba in english in order to vote now
