With your help, this could definitely have a better chance of working out here. I appreciate you over on RB with the poet's society. What do you think, should I go ahead and mod it? Or just request poetry battles in the topical league when it pops off again...

I'd wager 90% the board haven't either lol

A majority of the topical heads have participated in poetry leagues and battled each other on set forms like haikus, sonnettes and shit before. I don't expect a lot of the battlers that mainly do NBL etc. to be joining it though. I think it's cool af. Interesting to hear you talking about voting on/doing when you said poetry was only for faggots though, cool to see you questioning yourself. If it becomes a reality you should join and see if it's for you.

I wouldn't say so.

dead man 06-11-2015 08:57 PM

in the loosest sense of the word, this sentence is poetry

i support this fully.

we should poach some of the active poetry heads from RB and complete our takeover of all competitive internet writing.

Eŋg 06-11-2015 09:07 PM

verse = poetry

it doesn't have to be good. it might even be doggerel. it's still poetry.

Sn00p 06-11-2015 09:54 PM

what is the difference between poetry & topicals to yall? becuz like hush & knuckle said, if there isn't any clear cut one, why not integrate it into the topical league?

just an outsider's pov--

Vulgar 06-11-2015 10:11 PM

There's a large difference.

On rap forums, verses are supposed to rhyme and be either hip hop or literary, complementing the format with your style. The main objective is to rhyme.

With poetry, rhyming literally does not matter at all. It's optional. This is what sets it apart from verses quite distinctly and significantly. There is far less of a "hip hop" umbilical cord with poetry. It can be disconnected from all types of music, and still stand on its own. With verses, it's hard to do that because rap, as an art form, caters to the traditional elements that it was built upon. Poetry is a much more archaic art, more open to interpretation and variables during execution.

This is my view of the difference.

actual abstraction is always appreciated when it's done well

there's not so much of a storytelling element in poetry, which makes it easier and tougher in many different ways

mayniuhh 06-11-2015 11:51 PM

and then, I gun in mouth, nodded to the ghost of a knowing Homer who loled.

I flat out disagree that (a) rap or (b) topicals need to rhyme. They need to flow, preferably in, through and about a small series of melodies, true.

But rhyme?

No one will ever agree with me on that though, which is fine.
