This is the records thread so far. I will update it every week after closing battles. To make it easier, I say just wait until the season's over, and then factor in records?

@Dr Dog I can't remember if I did that one, but I do remember doing sonnets. Interesting though.

Up to you. End of season would be easy but time consuming. I'll do week to week since it's no problem, if your guys want their wins after each week (tbh I would as a battler but y'all are more patient than me)

Destroyer 07-17-2015 03:08 PM

do female votes even count?

Woke 07-17-2015 03:24 PM

I fucked up this week. Won't say how, but it's minor. Yet so important. Not sure how that happened

Side note, haikus suck

Destroyer 07-17-2015 03:47 PM

look assholes
haikus don't have to be 5,7,5
they can be a lot of things
so do t fucking vote against someone because the syllables aren't 5,7,5
those votes shouldn't count

Destroyer 07-17-2015 03:51 PM

my favorite haiku of all time is 7,6,5

her hair is winter fire
January embers
my heart burns there, too

This is true tbh.

Traditional haikus got a syllable count of 17 in total. Although modern haikus are increasingly not following it (source: Wiki). However;

Quote:

In 1973, the Haiku Society of America noted that the norm for writers of haiku in English was to use 17 syllables, but they also noted a trend toward shorter haiku.[12]
They don't speak of syllables going beyond 17, only shorter. I might be wrong so feel free to correct me.

But as of now; due to this I can see why it would be off-putting and a huge minus to someone when it goes beyond the 17 syllables to the degree it's worth to point out and maybe even rule out as a complete haiku.

Objective 07-17-2015 06:06 PM

Nevermind, I was wrong. Found a better source that goes in depth on Haiku's: http://www.hsa-haiku.org/archives/HS...ions_2004.html

Quote:

Though 17 syllables is still [in 1973] the norm in English language haiku, it is more and more common for a haiku to consist of fewer syllables. Rarely is a haiku [in English] longer than 17 syllables.
@Destroyer is right, it can be longer than 17 syllables although it rarely happens. I don't think the vote should count either.

It seems like it's more important that the Haiku is atmospheric and in style that makes it different to other forms of poetry. It's just that the 5,7,5 thing is the most common adaptation of Japanese Haiku. Today I learned. ^^

@Gina should read this as well (imo) and maybe reconsider deleting her vote and start over unless she can counter these sources. Ultimately it's up to the mods of this league tho' but Destro got a strong point about voting. I didn't mean to single you out or anything but I noticed your vote and Destro got a solid point.

Wouldn't end of season be easier tho?

I'd send you for ex:

Vulgar 7 wins 5 losses

EZ

Concerning haiku length/syllable count, you guys all right. There are a lot of variations to haikus. I'd definitely say, let it go, and we'll move onto bigger and better things in this league. Singled out poem-styles is a little on the close-minded side. I want to keep things free, open, and fresh.

Why can't we have both? THIS discussion is healthy, this shows interest from all sides. Free, open and fresh is dope af but closed forms like Haiku's and shit is what a poetry league should be as well. A little bit of everything, if not it's just another AOWL with less rules and preferably a little shorter verse from both each week imo.

Unless I fucked up and you meant in terms of voting.

ribbit 07-18-2015 06:19 AM

I voted on four battles...but my battle was closed before I could post the links so just wanted to make sure the mods realized this...thanks

Gina 07-18-2015 09:28 PM

My vote still stands the same. If, that's ok, @ hush,I can just re explain if necessary? @Hush

Destroyer 07-18-2015 10:47 PM

hush has no power here, Gina

Gina 07-19-2015 08:34 AM
