They should be at the opponents discretion, but there's no rule as such, although, as it's the playoffs, I think people should be on the ball and not be allowed any extra time. Honestly, I don't think extensions should be allowed at all, ever, especially now, it just cuts into voting time. Not that it'll matter in my case, I'm pretty sure nyc is going to end up winning, regardless, I believe he hasn't actually started writing yet, so its not like he's being given extra time to craft a masterpiece, its more of just extra time to shit out some nyc awesomesauce rather than possibly getting the deadline pressure nerves and being forced to drop something mediocre.

Honestly, I don't like extensions either. But it's the site policy. And it's not upon approval because that would be a fucking mess of technicalities. It has to either be upon request or not at all.

A 2 vote penalty would definitely be thwarting. But approval technicalities could be stymied by something like, the extension request has to have the opponent mentioned so its less likely to be missed, and if there's no response within 24 hours its automatically granted, and extensions can't be requested within 24 hours of the deadline. Boom soblem proved!

That's a lot of shit to keep track of and would lead to a lot of bitterness. A two-vote penalty ensures extensions are available but also makes them less desirable.

Ah, gotcha, I had that problem with my phone to, then it developed a dead spot line straight across the right side in landscape mode, but its just between the two bottom keyboard rows when vertical so I always type one thumbed.
